Tapos makulimlim pa which adds to the mood pa ng buhay ko.

Who would think that the country’s number one elementary school is located on a mountaintop in one of our poorest provinces?

The Sindangan Elementary School of Southern Leyte surprised everyone when it topped the 2006 National Elementary Achievement Test (NEAT) given by the Department of Education.
Sandra Aguinaldo meets the students and teachers of this quaint rural school, and documents exactly how Sindangan became the top elementary institution, at least in terms of test performance, in the country.

Much of its success can be attributed to Teacher Lea Gabriel. Teacher Lea herself grew up in Sindangan. She then moved to Manila, working as a domestic helper in order to send herself to college. When she decided to return to Sindangan to teach, she made sure that her students would get the best possible education she could provide. Teacher Lea would use games to teach math to her students. She would also make creative visual aids, spending out of her own pocket.

But many of her bright students will never even make it to high school because of poverty. After their elementary graduation, many of the boys go straight to work in the rice fields, while the girls go off to Manila to apply as house maids.
