It's official: Rainy season is here

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) yesterday officially declared the onset of the rainy season. Pagasa administrator Prisco Nilo said the criteria for declaring the onset of the rainy season have been met, including the prevalence of the southwest monsoon or hanging habagat and the 25-millimeter rainfall recorded in five Pagasa stations nationwide for five consecutive days.

Nilo said the rains experienced in the western section of the country were brought by southwesterly winds. “This development signals the onset of the rainy season on the first week of June in areas under Type 1 climate, which covers the western parts of Luzon and Visayas,” Nilo said. The rainy season is expected to last until the end of September. Monsoon breaks, or periods without rain, however, are expected during the season.
